OPPOR-VIEW-NITY

Tonight I sang at Ashford and Simpson’s Sugar Bar for Open Mic Night again.  I found my girl from the other Sugar Bar-related post — her name is Damara Lynn Greene!!  Do it do it, high kicks high kicks! This evening, she was wearing a black dress covered in sparkles and some fierce furry lashes (hope they were fake-fur)!

I was actually planning on doing the Artland Bar open mic, but I didn’t realize that it only happens on the first and second Thursdays of the month!  So I got the Schlepmobile back in gear and headed back to Manhattan from the BK.  On my way, I thought “Everything happens for a reason…”
So I get there and decide to sing a song by one of my favorite artists of all time, Jill Scott.  (Sugar Bar’s open mic is covers only.)  It’s hard to choose just one…but I went with “A Long Walk.”  The first time I ever performed it was with my college a cappella group, Essence of Soul (yeah Essence!!)…I sang the Rhodes keyboard part, so it was nice to sing lead this time.
Although a lot of chicks in the audience were singing along and dancing in their seats, one woman in the front row with a beautiful smile was really feeling it.  I LOVE feeding off audience energy; it’s a frontwoman’s dream to be able to really look at someone and connect and have a musical bliss-out together.
Guess who it was?! Sherri Shepherd, actress, comedienne, and star of The View!!  Let me tell you…she is gorgeous!  And she is OWNING the under 5′4″ hourglass thing.  Yes yes YES.
And for all you haters, she is NOT dumb. She carries herself with confidence and total awareness.
We chatted after the show, and she had just the nicest and most sincere things to say.  I am truly honored to receive compliments from someone who literally gets paid to air her viewpoints on national television!!

She really wanted to catch my show on the 24th, too!  (Sadly, she’ll be out of town.)  She asked me if I had a card or a website she could visit…my website and cards are getting a MAJOR nip/tuck (including a new name and logo — stay tuned!), so I couldn’t give her anything, but you BET your little bootys I will get right on top of that ASAP and follow up like it’s my job (I mean, it pretty much is).
This girl = feeling some major validation.  It’s a little foreshadowing of what’s to come.  I KNOW they’d dig me on The View.  I can’t WAIT to release my EP soon and sing and play all over this deliciously mad entertainment world!!!!
